An album titled Views of Peking [Beijing], Tientsin [Tianjin] and Neighbourhood with 48 photographs.
An accordion-fold album, including river views with boats, the city walls and the Imperial City in Beijing, overviews of Tianjin, numerous views of the Summer Palace, the French and British Legations in Beijing, street scenes and shopfronts, bridges, and temples. The first image, of Taku Fort in Tianjin, apparently shows a British flag flying. Tianjin, a port city in northeastern China, was the location of the concessions made to foreign governments in the second half of the 19th century and the scene of conflict between those forces and the Boxers. With a later notation on the inside pastedown noting that the album is from the Collection of Sir Robert Hart, a British diplomat and official who served in the Qing government from 1863-1911. He was the most important and influential Westerner in China during this period. Albumen prints, the images measuring 4x6 1/2 inches (10.2x16.5 cm.), and the reverse, mounted recto/verso, each with a caption label in English below the image. Small oblong 4to, accordion-folding cloth covers with a mounted gilt-lettered leather title, front cover detached, the accordion fold split in two places. 1890s
